What are “Gamification” and “Game Based Learning”?

These two terms are often misunderstood and even more often used interchangeably.  They are sometimes seen as modern, digital strategies that drive eLearning programs however their roots are much more embedded in everyday Teaching and Learning than you might think.

Gamification is the process of applying the mechanics of gameplay to non-game based situations to encourage a particular behavior or outcome.

Assessing the Curriculum with Minecraft: Education Edition | @SimBadd64

My projects always start with an assessment goal in mind and are planned in reverse from that point.  The Learning Sequence pictured for both THE BADDLANDS and ALIEN EXPLORATION were based on a project I once ran with very specific outcomes in mind from its conception.  I established a need, based on the tracking of assessment data for a group, and then planned the sequence according to the assessment outcomes that would raise their attainment in specific curriculum aspects.  Based on the success of the project, I knew it could be repeated and adapted.

DIRTy Feedback: Minecraft Style | @SimBadd64

Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT) cuts to the absolute core of learning.  Teach them something, work out what could be done better, show them how to make it better.  Yet when I give feedback to my students there is a real reluctance to revisit that work and improve it.  “You want me to do it again?  But I’ve already done it!”

The process of reflection and improvement modeled by AUSTIN’S BUTTERFLY grabbed me with its simplicity and effectiveness as soon as I saw it.  I’ve used it for a long while now and it is brilliant.  I show the video to every group I teach at the start of…

Cast your mind back to 2003.  As an eager, fresh faced young teacher I was offered one of those new-fangled Interactive Whiteboard things that were all the rage at the time.

“Do you want it on the left or the right of your whiteboard?”

“No, just get rid of the whiteboard and put it there”
